Abstract Four new phenolic acids, orthosiphoic acids A–D (1–4), together with seven known compounds were isolated from the aqueous extract of aerial parts of Clerodendranthus spicatus. Their structures including the absolute configurations were characterized on the basis of extensive 1D- and 2D-NMR, MS and CD analysis. The substituted pattern of the one hydroxyl group on the phenyl ring of 1 is rare which distinguished it from all other previously isolated rosmarinic acid derivatives. Compounds 1–7, 10 and 11 were evaluated for their anti-HIV-1 protease activity but all of them exhibited weak activities with IC50 > 30 μM
